Fox never looked better

She walked ahead of me,
long auburn hair splayed across the back
of her white fur coat
like a cape.
Fox never looked better.
I wouldn’t have believed that one day
that hair would lie spread
across my pillow.

We worked for a stockbroker.
She strutted the office aisles like runways.
All heads turned and she knew it.
One night I stayed late.
She sidled up to me and brushed her thigh
against mine.
I spread my legs and pulled her close.
Looking up into her green eyes,
I knew I was lost.
I’m still lost.

On that first night,
we walked part of the way home together.
As we passed a doorway
I took her
in my arms and we kissed long and deep.
She was so petite and light
I felt like a giant.

She hadn’t intended our romance to last.
I was merely a distraction.
She was engaged
to be married.

Although abandoned,
my broken heart is
ensnared by her
forever.
