Corrine was pregnant
when we first met.
Her beauty blinded me,
I was smitten.
She introduced me to her parents.
We played bridge with them at their kitchen table.
We lived together at her apartment.
Mornings, when I was scheduled to work
she seductively enticed me back to our bed.
One day she surprised me,
she had plane tickets to visit her grandmother in Texas
until her baby was born.
While away she didn’t write.
I was heartbroken awaiting a letter
that never arrived.
When she returned without her baby, she didn’t telephone.
I found out from mutual friends
that she was back in town.
When I asked her why she neglected to contact me
she declared she wanted a fresh start.
I should have seen this coming.
At a bar, she flirted with and tried to date my best friend
while the three of us were seated at the same table.
I was confused.
I’m still confused.
Do these things ever make sense?
