Midnight Blues

Down and Out Blues
Down and Out Blues (Photo credit: Wikipedia)

I walk the empty rain-soaked streets.
Footsteps echo against brick walls
as formidable as a prison.
There is no escape from loneliness
that devours the soul from within,
an endless cinema of despair.

Locked within this kaleidoscope,
distorted images from my past
haunt my dreams and nightmares.
There is no room for reality.
Players in my mind pull the strings,
dance this mournful marionette.

I follow the cooling evening breeze
with no purpose or destination.
My feet lead me forward in a trance.
I try to empty my mind of thoughts,
the destroyers of my self-esteem —
precariously held at bay.

Life is a never-ending battle,
one foot in front of the other,
seconds follow tedious seconds,
breaths counted entering and leaving,
heart beats its pounding rhythm
walking these empty rain-soaked blues.

sadness seeps into one at midnight
where time is neither today nor yesterday
standing still with no dark nor light
    suspended in a hushed way
a time to wander through thoughts of doubt
questioning the what if’s or whys
a time to wonder what this crazy life is about
a time to laugh or cry
midnight blues hold one’s heart in truth
    wide ranges of emotions stir
changing into so many midnight hues
where you give voice in thoughts to words…

deep emotions flow along your lines….
so many can and will feel them….

  4. “Life is a never-ending battle.” So true, so true. If only we can replicate those sweet little moments of joy we feel, and maintain them in our mind during the trials…
