waking up
in the morning.

i got some wine,
some cigarettes
and some maryjane —

i start walking,

These are the words of my friend, who I call Matches. This embodies his view of life. He is a joy to be around.
He got his name because while sleeping on a park bench somebody doused him with gasoline and set fire to him. He still bears the red and black scars where gangrene set in.
If this man can be happy, anybody can.

The words and sentiment were spoken by a close friend of mine who is alcoholic and was homeless. He has a wonderful outlook on life. He was once the sparring partner for George Chuvallo and Shawn O’Sullivan. Now, walking is difficult for him.
