Please, Take My Hand

.

There you are
an almost stranger.
Who am I to take your hand?
What I give is almost nothing –
but the heart to hear
and understand.

You tell me
you’ve been beaten,
stabbed with a machete,
made some choices
now regretted.

Sparking
eyes of azure blue
show a spectrum of emotions,
happiness, frustration,
pain and sorrow,
but, always
love.

Arisen
from behind a dumpster,
to living in a clean, safe house,
your life in order,
independent —
a miracle.

Inspiring
to me, and to everyone
fortunate enough to know you.
I would like to introduce you
to a wider audience
so that they too
may take inspiration
and see the miracle
that is your love,
that is you.

Please,
in friendship,
take my hand.

  4. This poem was inspiring to me. I also wrote about the homeless today, but with a different approach. Check it out: http://oshitbritt.wordpress.com/2013/09/18/on-the-homeless/

    1. Hi, I read your post “On the Homeless”. That is exactly the way I felt for most of my sixty-seven years. I’m glad that you have decided to give to a charity.

I sit with my homeless friends on a a daily basis. They need money, disability allowance isn’t enough to pay their bills, but what they want the most is to be recognized as human beings. A smile, a pleasant hello and a coffee go a long way. I started out with the intention of doing one good deed for a one person each day. You wouldn’t believe how much those good deeds are appreciated, by people who are routinely ignored or rebuked. ~ Dennis

      1. That’s really great. It’s hard to set aside your own ego for others, but once you do it is rewarding for yourself and the whole community.

    1. Hi Frayline, Thanks for your encouragement and support. This poem will be the on the first page of a book I’m writing http://gottafindahome.wordpress.com The book will feature conversations I’ve had with homeless friends over the past three years. I meet with them nearly every day.

I love your post “When you’re about to get pissed, choose to stay calm. You’ll have nothing to lose. Remember, patience is a virtue.” That’s something I have to keep in mind. ~ Dennis

  8. Is this story about Joy? The lady you wrote about on Saturday? She has been able to move into a house? That is wonderful Dennis! Will pray that she does well and is happy.

    1. Hi Elaine, yes, this is the story about Joy. In my other blog the entries sometimes jump for 2012 to 2013, if I don’t have anything to post on a particular day. This poem is intended for the first page of my book.

And yes, Joy is living in a basement apartment now. It isn’t ideal. She has a noisy neighbor upstairs, no heat and no phone. She has some furniture, but her couch is broken and she’d like a futon instead of a bed, so she’d have more room to move around. If she can get her health card (she’s been waiting since March) she’ll be able to deal better with her bipolar disorder, her epilepsy, her fibromyalgia and her pneumonia.

      Thanks for your prayers,
      Dennis
