Three Ravens

walking to the bus stop
I’m welcomed
by the squawks
of ravens,
as I am every day,
same time, same place.

further conversation
is avoided —
we’ve said it all before,
there’s nothing new.

they accept my presence,
scratch themselves,
snuggle
in snow-covered branches.

without warning
one drops
and soars into the distance,
another follows
then the third.

they land far away
on a telephone wire
three commas
on a line.

  3. they can be very talkative birds. ;) up in the Yukon where I use to live, there were some ENORMOUS ravens! quite tame though. :)

    1. Ravens have always fascinated me, partly because they’re so hard to ignore. They seem to want to tell the entire forest what I’m doing. ~ Dennis

  6. Thanks for following my blog. I especially like the observance of your surroundings juxtaposed against the routine of daily life here. When we witness nature in a metropolitan backdrop it is a profound and enlightening moment for sure. Happy Autumn.

    1. Thanks for your kind words. I love being enveloped in nature. I have to come back to the city to work, but even here, what I appreciate most are the natural elements that peek through. A “profound and enlightening moment for sure.” ~ Dennis

  7. Love the imagery of “three commas on a line”. Reminded me of a line in a poem by Owen Sheers (Welsh poet I went to school with) – “The swallows are italic again”

    1. Hi Iain, Thanks for your kind words. I like to think that I am a part of nature, not superior to the ravens, not quite one of them, but part of them. I enjoyed your poem “Harrison-Shepherd – had been eagerly named”. I also appreciate that you “seek communitas” as I do. ~ Dennis

      1. Ah, I am glad you have discovered the truth of communitas. It was one of those terms that sank into me straight away, I’ve never been the same since.
