The Mourning Dove

The silence of
the mourning dove,
more mournful
than her song.

She’s lost her mate,
her will to live,
yet time
still passes on.

Of days gone by,
she dreams her dreams,
when last she
heard him sing.

In widow’s weeds,
by empty nest,
a lonely dove
has lost her song.

Thank you for this. My mother lost her longtime love this year and her daughter (my sister) last year. This is our heart in words. Also, I appreciate the like and follow. I am new to blogging, a grand new adventure I hope.

  5. […] The Mourning Dove by Dennis Cardiff – An exploration of sorrow, grief and the suffering that goes along with that. I have not had to mourn the loss of many loved ones in my life, but certainly we all know the sorrow of loss to some degree. This poem is a wonderful, deep, expression of that. […]

  6. Sadly beautiful! Illustrates how animals share emotions we think of as solely human.

I agree, birds and animals are far more intelligent than most people assume.

  8. How ironic that one of a pair of our local doves has been missing for several days. Nice poem, Dennis.

      1. Thank you, Dennis–how wonderful to see you, as I’ll soon be posting a poem I think you will like–I thought of you, and your great compassion for the lost, disenfranchised souls, as I was writing it. God bless you.

    1. Thanks Jim, I enjoy your articles on running. My wife and I were both runners. She ran the Montreal Marathon, I was training for a half marathon. I’ve had two hip replacements and she is going in shortly for a knee replacement, so, under doctor’s orders, running is out.
