My First Car (Almost)

1946 Chevrolet Fleetmaster Sport Sedan

I burnt the engine out of my first car by not checking the oil and letting it run dry (I haven’t admitted that before). Anyway, I bought this one from Ray, my neighbor, for fifty bucks, a quart of oil, six beers and a half-pack of cigarettes. It looked old even when I bought it. Even so, I think I got a good deal.

It ran well until I lent it to my friend, Garry, who, in trying to impress his girlfriend, Lynn, ran it into the ground and returned it with the engine knocking. He also lost my high school football sweater to the sister of another girlfriend. I can’t remember her name.

It was a great car while it lasted. I loved the foot starter and the transmission that was accessible from the driver’s seat. Also, inside it had a cozy feel that I haven’t experienced with newer cars. This is my personal preference and not something that should be accepted as gospel.

In conclusion, if you have the opportunity to buy a 1946 Chevrolet Fleetmaster Sport Sedan, I would highly recommend it, however, don’t lend it to friends.

  1. I remember my first car. It was a nine-year old two-door with the material barely hanging onto the interior roof, but I loved it. Thanks for taking us down your memory lane, Dennis!

    1. First cars are special. They offer a sense of freedom previously unknown to adolescents. I remember cleaning and polishing my car until even the ashtray was shiny. I no longer have that kind of fastidious interest.
