space on the sidewalk

IMG_4797

there’s a space
on the sidewalk
where a smile once lived.
greetings go undelivered,
sarcasm left unsaid.

my mornings
now muted.
other lives,
many lives
mitigated.

we’ll say remember when —
but memories bring pain,
another reminder
of someone
we’ll never see
again.

  1. So sad, Dennis! You captured grief well in this poem.

    1. Thanks for your comment, Yvette.
Joy (not her real name) passed away ten years ago on 26 April 2013. She was a difficult person, she wouldn’t accept advice from her doctor, her probation officer, her street friends or me. I never understood why she would choose to sleep in a cardboard box, in summer and winter, behind a dumpster. I did what little I could to help her. If nothing else she knew I cared.

      1. And I’m sure your caring mattered. :-)
